QORMI VS GOZO U17

Victor Ciangura

Qormi managed to turn defeat into victory after being a goal in arrears in the first period which was dominated by Gozo as they created more actions than Qormi, but after the resumption, Qormi were a completely different outfit as they played much better than they did in the first period.

The Gozitans applied the early pressure. They won a free kick in midfield which was taken by Joseph Cassar and Qormi keeper Yan Galea had to come out of his charge to fist the ball away. Christian Camilleri entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and Galea denied him with a diving save. Jeremy Perez released Matthias Said in the area but he was foiled by a defender as he cleared the ball with a timely clearance and after a Neil Mifsud flag kick from the left flank Galea saved a Perez header to another corner which was taken by Said and Nicholas Grech missed the upright from inside the area.

In the first action by Qormi in the 14th minute, Neil Meli served Kieran Muscat in the area and Tristen Agius foiled him with a timely clearance.

After a right flank free kick by Camilleri, Galea fisted the ball to a corner which was well-taken by Mifsud and Nicholas Grech missed the upright with a header, and in their next action Gozo opened the score as Perez was fouled outside the area and Camilleri scored directly from the free kick with a very low and hard drive.

The last actions before the break were created by Qormi. Meli released Muscat on the right flank and after his high cross in the area, the ball was cleared away and Nathan Vella was fouled on the right flank and Andrew  Sciberras missed the far post by inches from the free kick.

Qormi applied the early pressure soon after the resumption. Shazen Magri entered the area after dribbling past an opponent who missed the upright by inches with Gozo keeper Gabriel Saliba beaten.

In the 46th minute, Qormi leveled matters as they won a free kick on the right flank and Meli scored a beauty with a hard rising shot past a helpless Saliba.

The pressure from Qormi resumed. Neil Schembri dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and tried his luck with a lobbed ball and Saliba was able to neutralize his effort and Muscat was fouled on the left flank and Saliba was forced to save to a corner the free kick shot by Sciberras.

In the 55th minute, Qormi scored the second goal when Meli served Magri with a through ball in the area who made no mistake with a hard low drive.

In an effort to save the game Gozo created the last two actions before the end. Tristen Agius served Said with a through ball in the area and Galea foiled him with a timely sortie and he did likewise when Camilleri served substitute Lorenzo Atzori with another through pass in the area.
